If you have one or more missing teeth, one solution is to have a denture fitted. A denture is made from hard-wearing materials that mimic the look of teeth and gums to give your mouth a natural appearance. Dentures are custom-made for you to fit snuggly on your gums and are removable for easy cleaning.
When you wear dentures for the first time they may take a bit of getting used to when speaking or eating, but this should quickly settle down. It is important to take extra care of your oral health if you wear dentures to avoid tooth decay and gum disease. Our hygienist will be able to show you how to best take care of your denture, how to keep it clean and advise you about the specialised brushes you can use to do this.
If you have loose or ill-fitting dentures it can affect your ability to eat and speak properly and make you feel self-conscious about your smile. However, with the advances in modern dentistry there is now a procedure whereby your denture can be fixed to your jaw with dental implants. This treatment, known as denture stabilisation or implant overdentures, offers patients with problem dentures a more permanent solution and can significantly improve your quality of life. You will be able to enjoy your favourite foods again and feel comfortable smiling, safe in the knowledge that your dentures are staying put.
Denture stabilisation requires surgery to have implants placed in your jaw. Once the implants have integrated with the bone and surrounding tissues over a period of time, your custom-made dentures are placed on top of the implants using a range of special fixtures. This means that your dentures will remain firmly in place, even at night, but can still be removed for easy cleaning, giving you a natural-looking smile, improved confidence and less irritation of your gums.
